Pre-exposure prophylaxis

Pre-exposure prophylaxis

Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medical approach to prevent HIV infection in people who are HIV-negative and at high risk. It is an effective way to reduce the risk of HIV in men who have sex with men (MSM).

PrEP involves taking a daily antiretroviral medication to reduce the risk of getting HIV through:

  • Unprotected sex (especially with an HIV-positive partner),
  • Shared needles (in injection drug use).

Recently World Health Organization (WHO) has released new guidelines suggesting the use of injectable Lenacapvir (LEN) twice a year as an additional pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) option for HIV prevention, in a landmark policy action that could help reshape the global HIV response.

LEN is the first injectable PrEP product that provides a highly effective, long-lasting alternative to daily oral pills. With only two doses needed per year, LEN helps protect people at risk of HIV, especially those who struggle with daily use, stigma, or accessing health care.
